Grant Writing

Grant Writing: How to Shape and Frame the Current and Pending Research Support Section

This section of the proposal calls for required information on all current and pending support for ongoing projects and proposals, including subsequent funding in the case of continuing grants. This section is not required with the proposal, but at the just-in-time stage. All current project support from whatever source (e.g., Federal, State, local or foreign government agencies, public or private foundations, industrial or other commercial organizations) must be listed. The proposed project and all other projects or activities requiring a portion of time of the PI and other senior personnel must be included, even if they receive no salary support from the project(s). The total award amount for the entire award period covered (including indirect costs) must be shown as well as the number of person-months per year to be devoted to the project, regardless of source of support. Similar information must be provided for all proposals already submitted or submitted concurrently to other possible sponsors.

  • Project Number: If applicable, include a code or identifier for the project.
  • Source: Identify the agency, institute, foundation, or other organization that is providing the support.
  • Major Goals: Provide a brief statement of the overall objectives of the project, subproject, or subcontract.
  • Dates of Approved/Proposed Project: Indicate the inclusive dates of the project as approved/proposed. For example, in the case of NIH support, provide the dates of the approved/proposed competitive segment.
  • Annual Direct Costs: In the case of an active project, provide the current year’s direct cost budget. For a pending project, provide the proposed direct cost budget for the initial budget period
  • Research Support
    • List both selected ongoing and completed (during the last three years) research projects (Federal or non-Federal support).
    • Begin with the projects that are most relevant to the research proposed in this application.
    • Briefly indicate the overall goals of the projects and responsibilities of the senior/key person identified on the Biographical Sketch.
    • Do not include number of person months or direct costs.
  • Research Support highlights your accomplishments, and those of your colleagues, as scientists. This information will be used by the reviewers in the assessment of each individual’s qualifications for a specific role in the proposed project, as well as to evaluate the overall qualifications of the research team.
