Are you Changing the World? How do you Know?

Let’s talk about changing the world — I mean, truly changing the world. I want to take it all the way down to the roots. How do we classify something as “world changing”? How do we know if it’s truly changed the world? What types of things change the world in a large-scale? Can we categorize them? As it turns out, we can.

There are a few large categories of world-changing events:

  1. Language
  2. Origin Tales
  3. Folklore
  4. Family Tree
  5. Jobs/Professions
  6. Gender Roles
  7. Clothing/Costumes
  8. Weather
  9. Flora and Fauna
  10. Food
  11. Geography
  12. Annual Rituals
  13. Technlogy
  14. Animals
  15. Religion/Spirituality
  16. Politics/Power

So, what can we do with this list? How does this help us change the world? I’m a big proponent of you have to know where you’ve come from to know where you’re going. For me, if you’re going to change the world, the only place to start is to look at who has changed the world before you.

Personally, I’ve made it my challenge this year to learn more about each of these categories on a global level. What are the world’s most influential languages? What origin tales have most shaped our current beliefs and sense-of-self on a global scale? What technologies have truly ‘changed the world’ and how? What are the longest living animals and what have we learned from them?
