Leadership confidence can positively impact faculty productivity, however preparing academic faculty for leadership roles has been challenging for academic medical centers.
Only a few studies have published results on evaluating specific leadership development programs of academic faculty, Hackworth (2018) addressed this gap by developing a program to improve faculty “leadership self-awareness, confidence, and skills” (Hackworth, 2018, p. 4). This program provided opportunities for self-reflection, peer support, and practice over an extended period while connecting faculty with leadership experiences at work, at home, and in their communities (Hackworth, 2018). Findings suggest that the leadership program “signiﬁcantly improved participants’ conﬁdence, self-awareness, and strategic, operational, and relational skills” Hackworth, 2018, p. 6).
The investment of leadership development programs that focus on self-awareness, confidence and leadership skills will assist in building productive research faculty.
