Make A Timeline: What does the next 10 years of your life look like?

Here is an amazing tip on planning for your future, both professionally and personally.

Open a spreadsheet and make a row for yourself, your spouse, each of your kids (even if they aren’t born yet), and a line for your family as a whole. Then, each column represents a year–you can go 10, 15 or even 50 years out.

In each cell, start to fill things in slowly for each person. Start with the kids–what grade will they be in? Then move to the family as a whole, are you buying a new house soon? When will you need to buy a new car? Are you planning to have more kids? Then look at your own timeline: when is the best time to go back to school? When do you want to reach your next promotion?

This is big-picture, life-changing goals. Share this document with your spouse and talk over your goals and plans for the future. Post it somewhere, like on your home vision board, to remind yourself of your goals and plans.
