A project management plan is a document that the project manager builds to describe in more details the planning of the project and its organization. It is a single formal document that explains the project. It provides a basis for making decisions and for confirming a shared and measurable understanding among key stakeholders.
As the PI, you need to be clear about the concepts of project management before you tackle creating any project management plans. Once created and approved, your entire project and all activities associated with it, is managed against your project management plan. The project management plan is a living document, and should be updated to reflect current progress and future forecast. The project management plan should be realistic and achievable, and must be approved by all stakeholders. Everyone on your team should believe that that project is achievable.
In the next few weeks, I’m going to focus on truly understanding the goal of project management plans, and guide you through creating your own management plans. As all projects are different, you may decide that several of the management plans do not apply to your project. For example, if you are the sole researcher and there is no other personnel, a Human Resources Management Plan will not be necessary. However, you should carefully explore each project management plan option before ruling out its viability on your project.
