This week’s Science Gets Literal illustration takes on one of the defining phrases of modern research: Big Data.
The literal interpretation is hard to resist. A giant tower of numbers rises into the sky while scientists stand below, gazing upward and wondering where to begin.

Advances in technology have transformed our ability to collect information. Genomics, imaging, electronic health records, wearable devices, and countless other systems generate enormous quantities of data every day. The opportunities are extraordinary.
So are the challenges.
Large datasets create possibilities for new discoveries, but they also require new approaches to organization, analysis, interpretation, and communication. More information does not automatically produce more understanding.
In many ways, the central challenge of modern science is not obtaining data. It is learning how to transform abundance into insight.
The mountain keeps growing. Our task is learning how to navigate it.
Science Gets Literal is an ongoing illustration series that explores scientific concepts through visual wordplay. Each piece begins with a familiar scientific term and asks a simple question: “What if we took that phrase literally?” My hope is that these drawings remind us that curiosity, creativity, and joy remain essential parts of discovery.
