This week’s Science Gets Literal illustration explores the concept of a Data Pipeline.
Taken literally, the phrase conjures images of enormous industrial pipes carrying streams of numbers from one location to another. Scientists stand nearby with wrenches, monitoring gauges and repairing leaks.

Scientific information rarely moves directly from collection to conclusion. Data passes through multiple systems, processes, transformations, validations, analyses, and reporting structures before it becomes useful knowledge.
Much like physical infrastructure, these systems require continuous attention. Small errors can create downstream consequences. Bottlenecks can slow progress. Neglected maintenance can compromise the entire operation.
When pipelines function well, they become nearly invisible. Researchers focus on the discoveries they enable rather than the infrastructure that supports them.
Yet modern science increasingly depends on these unseen systems. Good research is not simply about generating information. It is about creating pathways that allow information to move effectively.
Science Gets Literal is an ongoing illustration series that explores scientific concepts through visual wordplay. Each piece begins with a familiar scientific term and asks a simple question: “What if we took that phrase literally?” My hope is that these drawings remind us that curiosity, creativity, and joy remain essential parts of discovery.
