This week’s Science Gets Literal illustration focuses on one of the defining concepts of translational science: Bench to Bedside.
The drawing imagines a conveyor belt carrying discoveries from a laboratory workbench directly to a hospital bed.
The reality, of course, is far more complicated.

Scientific discoveries do not automatically become improvements in patient care. Between an initial finding and a clinical application lies a long journey involving validation, replication, regulatory review, implementation, and evaluation.
Translation is often less visible than discovery itself. Yet it is one of the most important stages of the scientific process.
A promising finding has little impact if it never reaches the people who could benefit from it.
The phrase bench to bedside reminds us that science is ultimately about more than knowledge generation. It is about improving lives.
Every major medical advance began as an idea, an observation, or a question. Translation is the process that carries those discoveries into the real world.
Science Gets Literal is an ongoing illustration series that explores scientific concepts through visual wordplay. Each piece begins with a familiar scientific term and asks a simple question: “What if we took that phrase literally?” My hope is that these drawings remind us that curiosity, creativity, and joy remain essential parts of discovery.
