The Science Gets Literal series continues with one of biology’s most remarkable systems: the immune response.

When people think about the immune system, they often picture a battle. Invaders arrive. Defenders respond. Threats are eliminated.

While that image is partly true, it overlooks the extraordinary level of organization involved. The immune system functions less like an army charging into battle and more like a sophisticated communication and logistics network.

That is what inspired this illustration.

What if antibodies worked in a giant mailroom, sorting packages, delivering messages, and directing responses to the appropriate destination?

The metaphor turns out to be surprisingly accurate. Immune cells must identify threats, share information, coordinate actions, and remember previous encounters. The success of the response depends on communication and organization just as much as strength.

Many of our most effective systems operate this way. Success is often determined not by the size of the response, but by the quality of the coordination behind it.

The immune system reminds us that resilience is rarely the product of a single actor. More often, it emerges from networks working together toward a common purpose.

Science Gets Literal is an ongoing illustration series that explores scientific concepts through visual wordplay. Each piece begins with a familiar scientific term and asks a simple question: “What if we took that phrase literally?” My hope is that these drawings remind us that curiosity, creativity, and joy remain essential parts of discovery.
